SLJ Week 2 Day 2

On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?
I would not like to try flax weaving again because I didn’t like it. Why? I tried weaving and found it wasn’t one of my ‘I love doing this’ kind of activity.

On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?
Who - The Masked Man
From - The Land Of Stories Series
Strong and Tough? Why - The Masked Man is a strong, tough person, but not heavy weight lifting way, instead in a powerful way. The Masked Man is an evil literary character who wiped the lands of the fairytale world and captured all the villagers and royals using his late mother's (Fairy Godmother) portal potion that can make any book into a portal to go inside the book. Using the potion he went into The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Peter Pan. Using all of the evil characters from the books he transported them into the fairytale world and used the evil armies and rulers to wipe the fairytale world.

SLJ Week 1 Day 5

On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.

Have you ever wondered what logging in New Zealand can do? Well, I have and I think logging in NZ should not be allowed. Kia ora, I’m Louisa Joyce and I’m here to tell you why logging should be banned in New Zealand. My reasons are as followed.

First off, logging should be banned in NZ because of what we’re doing to animals habitats. Imagine if the animals were breaking our houses so they could have more space, would you like that? The animals probably don’t like us cutting down their homes either.

The final reason, trees provide oxygen for us to breath, so the more trees we cut down the less oxygen we have to breath. Really the trees are doing us a favour by giving us oxygen, so we should give them the will to keep growing.

So now do you agree with me? We should ban logging in NZ because we cut down animals habitats and trees do us a big favour. So let’s ban logging in New Zealand!

On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.
Dear Mum,
The tundras were pretty cold, my classmates and I could barely survive the chilling temperature. Tundra is an area of land (biome) that is quite cold. Did you know that the tundras average temperature is -25℃. I didn’t know how we could breath if the tundras were tree less. Sadly in the last few years the tundras temperature have been rising and the weather has been changing, soon no one will be able to visit the beautiful sights tundra has to offer.
Love from Louisa

On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.

New Zealand is a beautiful country with nice beaches and great skiing fields. Since I have travelled all over New Zealand I know pretty much everything. There are to islands that create New Zealand, the North Island and the South Island. The North Island is a simple island with lots of greats things to see and do. One of the North Island's greatest activities is Tongariro National Park, with great skiing fields it is located near Lake Taupo, the center of the North Island. The South Island is a scenic area with lots of things to do like go on the TranzAlpine express in Christchurch. Overall New Zealand is a great country to visit!

SLG Week 1 Day 4

On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.
  1. What made you decide to climb up Mount Everest?
  2. Who was your hero when you were young?
  3. What was your feeling when you made it to the top of Mount Everest?
  4. What were your hardest times during your climb?
  5. Did you have second thoughts while climbing?

For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.
My favourite food is sushi here is how you make it,

Ingredients

RICE

  • 1 cup white rice (sushi rice if you can get it)
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

EVERYTHING ELSE

  • 4 sheets nori (dried seaweed)
  • 1 cup chopped veggies (carrot, cucumber, red pepper, avocado)
  • Soy sauce/tamari, pickled ginger, wasabi (optional // for serving)

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing your rice. Rinse rice in a fine mesh strainer until your water runs clear. Then add to a medium saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Once it boils reduce heat to low, cover and cook until water is completely absorbed – about 15 minutes.
  2. In the meantime, add vinegar, sugar and salt to a small saucepan and heat over medium heat stirring occasionally until sugar and salt are dissolved. Place in a jar or dish and cool in the fridge until rice is ready.
  3. Once the rice is done, kill the heat and add the cooled vinegar mixture and stir with a rubber spatula or fork as to not overmix. It will appear wet but will dry up as you lightly stir to release heat. It should be sticky and completely dry once it’s ready.
  4. In the meantime, prep your veggies by chopping them into thin pieces. If they’re too bulky they won’t allow the sushi to roll well.
  5. Now it’s time to roll: grab a thick towel and fold it over into a rectangle and place it on a flat surface. Top with plastic wrap, then with a sheet of nori. Using your hands dipped in water (to avoid sticking), pat a very thin layer of rice all over the nori, making sure it’s not too thick or your roll will be all rice and no filling.
  6. Then, arrange a serving of your veggies or preferred filling in a line at the bottom 3/4 of the rice closest to you (see photo).
  7. Start to roll the nori and rice over with your fingers, and once the veggies are covered, roll over the plastic wrap and towel, using it to mold and compress the roll (see photo). Continue until it’s all the way rolled up.
  8. Slice with a sharp knife and set aside.
  9. To make the inside out roll, follow this awesome tutorial. See photos for how to apply a layer of avocado on the outside.
  10. Serve immediately with pickled ginger, soy sauce and wasabi.
On your blog tell us where you would build your hotel and what you would use to build it. For an extra five points, use Google Drawings to design one room in your hotel. You can also use a paper and pencil to draw your room, take a picture of the drawing, and post it on your blog.

SLJ Week 1 Day 3

On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.
My beast has got a dragon face, like a night fury with horns. It’s middle area is robot body. Finally, it has scaly dinosaur end to its interesting body.

On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.
I only did one for each.
1 Pro about being a DOC employee
  1. Different jobs to do
1 Con about being a DOC employee
  1. There are only some places where you can work

Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:
1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.
2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.

One of the animals that WWF are saving are freshwater seals. WWF are building snow banks on the lakes for the seals to use.

SLJ Week 1 Day 2

On your blog, tell us whether you would like to go and visit Tāne Mahuta one day. Be sure to tell us why you do (or do not) want to visit this endemic tree.
I would like to see Tane Mahuta in real life because he is a New Zealand god and a piece of a puzzle which brings New Zealand together.

On your blog list three sports teams that have the word ‘fern’ in their title. Beside each team’s name, post a picture of their uniform. Then, at the bottom of your blog post tell us which of the three uniforms you like best and why.

An Environmental Plastic Problem in Schools

The word environmental means it is relating to the natural world. Plastic is a synthetic material made from a range of organic substances such as polyethylene, nylon, etc. The word problem means a situation needing to be dealt with. One problem the schools in the industry have are plastic wrappers flying to a faraway land, in other words the sea and farms.

One way to stop this plastic problem is to take containers with food in in them not plastic wrapped food. Containers are to be used more than once so, instead of having plastic wrapped food in your lunchbox everyday you can use your container each day instead, don’t forget to wash it after school! At home say you had a little packet of chips, open the chip packet, put the chips in a container, put the rubbish in the bin and boom problem solved, now your plastic packet won’t be dropped on the ground at school and fly to the faraway land I talked about before.

If you have plastic in your lunchbox remember to always put it back in your lunchbox. Some kids can open plastic wrapping at school, eat whatever the food is inside the wrapper, put the wrapper in their pocket and go off to play on the playground then, the wrapper falls out of their pocket and gets swept up by the wind into the drains and goes out to the ocean where the sealife can eat it. Always put your rubbish in your lunchbox.

To help your schools rubbish problem go around with a recyclable bag picking up all the rubbish you see. This can be a big help to the environment, sealife and farm animals because if the sealife and farm animals eat it they can simply die within a couple of hours.

The plastic problem in schools is increasing slowly because of the big habit plastic has become to us humans. That's how plastic is a problem in schools.

Grandparent Writng

Hello,
This Friday at Ohaeawai School is Greats and Grands Day. This day is when every student invites one of their grandparents and their grandparents get to see what the students have been learning about. We wrote two pieces of writing an explanation piece of writing and a piece of creative writing. The explanation writing is about a problem that grandparents might be facing because of aging. The creative piece of writing is about your grandparents and how much you love them! Here is my writing.

Grandparents not being able to interact with other family members

A grandparent is a mother or father who has had a baby and the baby of the mother or father has had a baby. Aging is the process of a person growing older and more fragile. This so called ‘aging’ is a problem for people growing older and one of those problems are not being able to interact with other family members.

Firstly, grandparents may have a problem that prevents them from hearing or seeing their family members at important moments. The grandparent could talk to one of their family members and go get the problem fixed.

Secondly, grandparents can live far away from others important to them, one grandparent could live in London and the grandchild could live in New Zealand. To prevent this problem both of the family members could write to one another each week like writing buddies.

Finally, grandparents sometimes don’t interact enough with their grandchildren, the grandchild could be playing on his or her phone all day when they are with their grandparent, how would you feel if you were the grandparent then? Now it’s up to the grandchild to do things that you and your grandparent can do together like gardening.

Family members are important to grandparents and not being able to interact with you can be a problem to them, so take on my ideas and be a good family member!

Holiday Daily Diary

Monday, October 1st 2018, Day 3
Kia ora,
Today I went to work with my mum. It was quite boring but fun at the same time. This time I have made a back story of my down and out character for you to read. Here it is.

Once a boy named Bob had a dream to become a businessman.
At twenty years old that dream became a reality. A couple of
years later Bob became filthy and spent to much money on
himself. He asked his butler to tell his workers that the business
had become bankrupt and that they should pack their stuff up
and go home. Bob walked the streets of New York wearing a rag
for clothes. One day he heard a miserable phrase that sounded
like this ‘Down, down, down and out’. Bob followed the sound and saw a line of people like him getting bowls of soup. There were two ladies standing at the front of the line holding a sign that said ‘The Lord Will Provide’. Bob went up to the ladies and asked if he could join the group. The ladies replied with a shrug and pointed to a bin of clothes. Bob ran over to the bin, put on some clothes and joined the group to get soup. To this very day Bob still say the miserable phrase ‘Down, down, down and out’ although his story may have a change…
