This week we had to create a venn diagram. Venn diagrams compare and contrast two different things. Our venn diagrams are based on Christmas in New Zealand and Christmas in either Sweden, Mexico or England. I chose to base mine on Christmas in New Zealand and Christmas in Sweden

Graduation Dinner

On Tuesday all the year 6's had a graduation dinner at the rugby club. I am happy and sad at the same time to leave Ohaeawai School. At the graduation dinner we all got a necklace. Here is my graduation dinner photo.

Pet Day

In November the school had a Pet Day. Every student had an opportunity to bring a pet to school. For pet day we made vaseline saucers out of flower petals. I brought chickens to school and they won second place!

Comic Book Making

Today we created our own comics after reading 'The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors'. We had to choose either to create a comic using two characters from the book or use two other classroom tools. The items had to duel each other and one would have to win. I choose paper and a pencil to duel each other. Here is my comic.

An Environmental Plastic Problem in Schools The word environmental means it is relating to the natural world. Plastic is a synthetic material made from a range of organic substances such as polyethylene, nylon, etc. The word problem means a situation needing to be dealt with. One problem the schools in the industry have are plastic wrappers flying to a faraway land, in other words the sea and farms. One way to stop this plastic problem is to take containers with food in in them not plastic wrapped food. Containers are to be used more than once so, instead of having plastic wrapped food in your lunchbox everyday you can use your container each day instead, don’t forget to wash it after school! At home say you had a little packet of chips, open the chip packet, put the chips in a container, put the rubbish in the bin and boom problem solved, now your plastic packet won’t be dropped on the ground at school and fly to the faraway land I talked about before. If you have plastic in your lunchbox remember to always put it back in your lunchbox. Some kids can open plastic wrapping at school, eat whatever the food is inside the wrapper, put the wrapper in their pocket and go off to play on the playground then, the wrapper falls out of their pocket and gets swept up by the wind into the drains and goes out to the ocean where the sealife can eat it. Always put your rubbish in your lunchbox. To help your schools rubbish problem go around with a recyclable bag picking up all the rubbish you see. This can be a big help to the environment, sealife and farm animals because if the sealife and farm animals eat it they can simply die within a couple of hours. The plastic problem in schools is increasing slowly because of the big habit plastic has become to us humans. That's how plastic is a problem in schools.

Grandparent Writng

This Friday at Ohaeawai School is Greats and Grands Day. This day is when every student invites one of their grandparents and their grandparents get to see what the students have been learning about. We wrote two pieces of writing an explanation piece of writing and a piece of creative writing. The explanation writing is about a problem that grandparents might be facing because of aging. The creative piece of writing is about your grandparents and how much you love them! Here is my writing.

Grandparents not being able to interact with other family members

A grandparent is a mother or father who has had a baby and the baby of the mother or father has had a baby. Aging is the process of a person growing older and more fragile. This so called ‘aging’ is a problem for people growing older and one of those problems are not being able to interact with other family members.

Firstly, grandparents may have a problem that prevents them from hearing or seeing their family members at important moments. The grandparent could talk to one of their family members and go get the problem fixed.

Secondly, grandparents can live far away from others important to them, one grandparent could live in London and the grandchild could live in New Zealand. To prevent this problem both of the family members could write to one another each week like writing buddies.

Finally, grandparents sometimes don’t interact enough with their grandchildren, the grandchild could be playing on his or her phone all day when they are with their grandparent, how would you feel if you were the grandparent then? Now it’s up to the grandchild to do things that you and your grandparent can do together like gardening.

Family members are important to grandparents and not being able to interact with you can be a problem to them, so take on my ideas and be a good family member!

Harvest Mice Report

For the last two weeks we have been writing animal reports in preparation for writing a report on trout after the ski trip. I chose to write my animal report on a harvest mouse. Harvest mice are a type of British mouse. Here is my report.

Harvest Mice

Classification

A harvest mouse is a vertebrate animal which means it has bones on the inside or most
commonly known as a skeleton. Harvest mice are mammals which means they give birth
to young. They belong to the Muridae family. Their full name is Eurasian Harvest Mouse.
It’s scientific name is Micromys minutus.

Appearance

Harvest mice are Europe's smallest rodents. They have got a good gripping tail like a
monkey. These mice have a reddish-yellowish coat, a white furry belly, small hairy ears,
tiny skinny legs and a much blunter nose than other mice. An adult harvest mouse weighs
seven grams. Their adult length is five point nine centimeters. They range from fifty five
to seventy five millimeters long. Their tail reaches from fifty to seventy five millimeters
long.

Habitat

Harvest mice are native to England and Asia. Harvest mice are mainly found from Central
Yorkshire southwards which passes Nottingham and Northampton. Wherever tall grass,
cereal and hedgerows grow is where they like to live. They like places that have things to
build nests in. They live for less than one year in the wild.

Diet

Harvest mice are omnivores so they eat meat and plants. They mainly feed on berries,
buds, seeds, fruit, bulbs and new grass shoots. A small amount of their diet is based on
insects. They usually eat insects during the summer. Also in the summer they eat fungi,
moss and roots. Some food is hidden underground for winter. They collect their food by
first off smelling it out, then they go to the location their nose takes them to, then they
grab it with their tail and bring it back to the nest.

Reproduction

Harvest mice breed before they are one year old. They can have three to seven litters a
year. Their mating season is in between May and October. The mating season can go
onto December depending on the weather. They are pregnant for two weeks and five days.
The young are weaned from milk by fifteen days. A litter can have up to eight young. The
estimated population of harvest mice is 1,425,000.

Threats

The harvest mouse is easily affected by land changes. That includes harvesting, burning
of bristles, hedge removal and pest removal. Climate change and flooding can also be
threats. Animals like crows can kill harvest mice.

Conclusion

That is the end of my report on harvest mice. I hope you learnt something from my work.
I find harvest mice interesting with their different features compared to other mice, like its
blunt nose. Fact Time! Did you know that harvest mice are mostly nocturnal?

Thoughts were racing through Kedi’s mind as fast as the time he killed a mouse on
Saies St. That was a good time he thought, as he went off track into his gila mind.
“Wait where was I?” Kedi said with a shock. “That’s right, I was planning my life.”
You may not have figured this out yet but Kedi had different ideas from his brothers. He wanted to be the first cat to cross the whole entire planet. So cross the planet he shall.

Chapter 2: Shock

Kedi went to sleep late that night. Why? Because his worst nightmare had just come upon his racing bijaksana mind. This nightmare was so dark, so scary and so creepy. This exact nightmare was...

He had to tell his family the news! Dun dun dun…

Kedi woke up with shock from a nightmare about telling his family the news. He had never even thought twice about how much this would scare him. “I mean it was only one nightmare, what if I had the same nightmare over and over and over again but each time it got creepier?” said Kedi to himself. Suddenly his confidence spiralled down. But, deep down inside Kedi still had the courage to tell his family and complete his dreams of crossing the world. The next day he didn’t pack his bag, instead he went straight to his family. “I’m going to cross the World” Kedi quickly said to his family. “Woh, woh, woh speak slower chippy cat,” said his Dad. “Ok, I’m going to cross the entire planet,” mentioned Kedi shyly. “What, that’s awesome, we're so proud of you,” all of his family shouted. This definitely isn’t the reply Kedi expected. His family all gave him a hug and left Kedi alone to go and pack for his big adventure.

Chapter 3: The beginning, well the beginning of the list

Kedi had just put himself in a very difficult position. He had written an extremely long list of stuff to pack. It was so long that he thought he could make a world record for the longest list in the world. You may not think this list is long, but for a cat it is. As Kedi was packing his bag Manchester came rushing into Kedi’s tree and flopped straight onto a branch fast asleep. Kedi carried on packing. He aimed to leave his tree at 6am sharp. It started to rain so Kedi took his bag under a big leafy branch to stay dry. Not the kind of start he wanted for his amazing adventure. He was starting to tick off things on the list until he saw the word ‘camera’. He hadn’t seen that camera for days. Kedi only had half an hour till he had to leave. He searched everywhere. Under his blanket, around the built in kitchen. He couldn’t find it anywhere! Then he saw Manchester. Kedi looked under Manchester and what did Kedi find, his camera! He walked over to his bag and in went the camera. Kedi was starting his adventure at exactly 6am sharp.

Chapter 4: Plane trouble!

Clip, clap, clip. Kedi was running onto a plane to go to Sydney in Australia! Rmmm the engine started. Rmmm the plane was on

the runway. Rmmm take off! Kedi was surprisingly in the business class room. There, waiting for Kedi was a seat glimmering in the sunlight praying that Kedi would sit on its comfy, puffy seat. Plop! Kedi was on it in a jippy. “This is what I’ve been dreaming about,” Kedi said falling to sleep. Ring ring! He was awoken by a bell. He looked over his shoulder and saw a cart full of food. “Hello… Cat!!!” “There’s a cat on the plane ahhh!!!” Screamed the flight attendant. Kedi pounced around until eventually he found the animal area. “Please tighten your seatbelts we are going in for a landing…”

Chapter 5: Watch out Sydney here Kedi comes!

Sizz, sizz, sizz! “Ahh!” screamed a flight attendant running into the controls room. “The wings are on fire! Make a call!” “Hello guests please stay calm but we are going in for a CRASH landing,” called out the pilot through the speaker. “Anybody, anyone, everybody SCREAM!” Yelled the Soca Boys. Everyone just had the instinct to scream. They never even listened to the Soca Boys. Kedi, wondering how to escape in time had to go for the first plan that came into his head. He rushed around unlocking all of the other animals and told them to follow him through the hatch to the top of the plane. They listened alright. “The door, it’s open, jump out NOW!” Yelled Kedi to the other animals. POOF! The plane burst into flames at the exact moment they jumped out. It looked so cool as they jumped out acting like they were movie stars. But, actually they were risking their lives for entertainment. No, literally they were, someone was videoing them at the time. “Good job troop,” he said to the animals as if they were in his army at war. Kedi walked out to the harbour not knowing where he was going…

Chapter 6: Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

Kedi walked into this curved building on the harbour of Sydney not knowing where he was. Kedi was so tired from his adventure so far he fell into a deep sleep in this sort of auditorium with hard concrete walls. 2 hours later… “HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH!” Kedi was woken up by a loud noise coming from what he could see a lady, an opera lady. “BE QUIET!” Yelled Kedi. But from what humans could hear it just sounded like this “MEOW MEOW!” For some reason the security was called. Right about now you would think that Kedi would have scrambled but no he waited until the security came. “Bye, bye have a nice concussion,” Kedi said and moved out of the way so the security would bonk their heads on the hard wall. Kedi ran as far as he could looking back at what he had just done. He didn't notice that he had just jumped into a submarine…

Waitangi Experience

On Tuesday and Wednesday half of the class went to the new Learning Centre in the Waitangi Museum. We got use cool technology like virtual reality and Tinker Cad. Tinker Cad is a program  where you build things in 3D. We also got to look through the museum and see awesome things like weapons that Maori soldiers and European soldiers used in the Battle of Taiamai. This week with Mrs Craig we focused on creative writing. We got to choose what we wanted to write about. We could choose Lego and Lego stop motion or use pictures. I decided to do a Lego stop motion with Sara and Ronan. Our story is about a princess being captured by the Joker. We had to make a story to go with it. NYLD Conference

Last week all the Young Leaders went to Auckland for the NYLD (National Young Leaders Day) Conference. First we went to Pt England School and did some animating. It was really fun! Next we went to Mt Eden Motel where we were staying. Then we went to Wagamama restaurant, I had a mini ramen which is a soup with corn and chicken, a raspberry sorbet and orange juice. Next we went tenpin bowling I lost both games but got a strike. The next day we went to the conference, here are the some of the speakers names Riley Hathaway, Amanda Wilson, Jono Naylor and more. Environmental Writing

This week we went on a nature walk. We had to write down things to do with Autumn. We used our 5 senses touch, taste, hear, see, smell and we had to sketch what we saw, we left out the taste. When we got back in class we went to our chromebooks and started writing one of these types of writing cameo, recount, free verse poem, shape poem or a rhyming poem. I decided to write a rhyming poem. Here it is.

Commonwealth Games Report

Last term we hosted our own mini Commonwealth Games. First we had to get into a group. Secondly we had to make a game and work out what we would need. Next we had to make a advertisement poster, a rules poster, certificates and choose a country in the Commonwealth to represent, my group chose Jamaica. Finally we waited for the day. This week we have been learning about similes. There are three kinds of similes like, as and than, we have been learning about like and as similes. Today we just copied our doc and changed our as similes into than similes. Here are my than similes.

An owl’s eye is rounder than a plate.	An elephant trunk is longer than girls hair swaying in the wind.
A flagpole is taller than tree trunk.	A soldier is stronger than a lion.
An overflowed rubbish pile is stinkier than a sock.

This week we have been learning about similes. There are three kinds of similes like, as and than, we have been learning about like and as similes. We first off got into pairs and learnt the structure of a simile by collecting 2 pictures and finding the words to match them, secondly we went to our chromebooks and opened a doc, matched the pictures and wrote like similes about them, finally we showed the teachers. Today we just copied our doc and changed our like similes into as similes. Here are my like and as similes.
